Double Drawn Hair: What You Pay For, What Gets Discarded

That one difference in sorting is the reason two bundles of the same weight, the same donor origin and the same texture can carry very different prices.

What "drawn" means

A donor's ponytail is never one length. Hair grows in cycles, so a cut ponytail holds strands at full length and strands at half that, mixed together.

Drawing is the sorting step that happens after the cut. Workers pull the shorter strands out of the bunch by hand, in stages. How many passes they make is what the grade name refers to.

One pass gives you single drawn. Two gives you double drawn. The passes cost labour and they cost weight, because everything pulled out is hair you paid for and no longer have.

What the bundle looks like

Roughly 60% of the strands sit at the stated length. The rest run shorter, spread down through the bundle.

Hold it upside down and the ends fan out into a point. The weft is thick at the top and thin at the last few inches.

What it costs

The cheapest of the three grades, because nothing is discarded. Whatever the donor grew is what gets sewn onto the weft.

Who it suits

Layered cuts, blended installs, anywhere the stylist wants a natural taper at the bottom. Also anyone building a look that will be cut and thinned anyway, since paying to remove short hair only to cut the ends again is money spent twice.

Clients who want blunt, heavy ends will be unhappy with it. That is the whole complaint about single drawn.

How much hair is discarded to make it

A second sorting pass removes most of what is left below the target length. One published vendor figure puts the loss at 25%: I Love Slavic Hair states that 200g of single drawn yields 150g of double drawn (iloveslavichair.com, published 3 October 2022, self-published and not independently audited).

Our own yield varies by donor length and texture, and the sorting is step two of our 6-step production process. It happens on our factory floor, so the discard pile is a thing you can look at on a video call.

Ask your vendor to show you the sorting bench. A factory can. A reseller cannot.

What it costs

More per gram than single drawn, and the gap widens as the length goes up. At 12 inches the sorting throws away short hair that is still sellable elsewhere. At 26 inches, the short strands being pulled are themselves long enough to be a product, and donors that long are rare to begin with.

Third-party market prices from the Google Shopping carousel for "double drawn hair" on 12 August 2026 ran from $26.64 to $170 per bundle across ten sellers, with no consistency in what the label covered. Who it suits

Ponytails and drawstring pieces, where the tip is on display. Bulk hair for braiding, where thin ends are visible in every plait. Wigs and closures that need density held all the way down. Salon clients who asked for thick ends and will notice within a week if they did not get them.

Double drawn also holds up better through repeated installs, since there is less short hair working loose at the weft over time.

Super double drawn hair

Whether it is a real grade or a marketing term

Super double drawn is a third pass. The bundle comes out close to one uniform length, with the root end and the tip end nearly matched in thickness.

No standards body defines the term. No audit exists. A vendor can print it on a bundle that had two passes, or one, and nothing happens.

What it describes is thickness at the ends. It says nothing about donor count, cuticle direction, or chemical history. A super double drawn bundle can be a six-donor blend that spent forty minutes in a steamer, and the label is still accurate on its own terms.

So treat it as a spec to verify by hand, the same as any other claim on the packet.

Why double drawn costs more

Yield loss is the whole mechanism.

A worker starts with a fixed weight of raw ponytail. Every pass takes weight off it, and the buyer of the finished bundle pays for the hair that was removed as well as the hair that arrives. Add the labour, which is hand work that cannot be run through a machine without breaking the cuticle alignment you sorted for in the first place.

Then supply. Making a 100g double drawn bundle at 26 inches means starting with substantially more than 100g of hair that was already 26 inches long. Those donors are the scarcest input in the category.

The short strands pulled out do not go in the bin. They get sold on as shorter product, which is why a factory can price double drawn sensibly and a reseller buying finished bundles cannot. 

How to check drawn type on a bundle you already have

Four checks, all of them possible with the bundle in your hand.

1. Fold it in half.Hold the weft at the top, fold the hair back on itself, and compare the thickness of the folded end against the thickness at the root. Close to matched means double drawn. Visibly thinner means single.
2. Fan the ends against light.Hold the tip up to a window. Single drawn shows a soft gradient of strand ends over several inches. Double drawn shows a much shorter, blunter band.
3. Comb from the tip up.Comb a section upward from the ends toward the weft. On single drawn, short strands slip out of the comb and stand up along the length. Count how many.
4. Weigh, then measure.Lay the bundle flat and measure from weft to the bulk of the ends, not to the longest strand a vendor used for the photo. A bundle sold as 22 inches whose density stops at 17 is single drawn being sold on its best strand.
