What is raw Vietnamese hair, and why does it perform differently from everything else on the extension shelf?

The answer comes down to one thing: the cuticle. Raw Vietnamese hair has a fully intact cuticle, aligned root to tip, with no acid baths or silicone coatings in its history. That single difference is what separates raw hair from the processed alternatives sold at similar price points.

This guide covers what "raw" actually means, how we produce it at our factory, and what to expect when you install it.

Summary

Raw = unprocessed, single-donor, cuticle intact and naturally aligned

Vietnamese = finer shaft, stronger cuticle, sourced from rural northern Vietnam

Why it lasts: there's no coating to degrade over time. The hair holds because the structure was never broken.

What raw Vietnamese hair actually means

"Raw hair" is one of the most misused terms in the extensions market.

Here's the plain-English version.

The cuticle: what it is and why it matters

Every strand of hair has an outer layer called the cuticle. Think of it as overlapping scales running from root to tip. When all those scales face the same direction on every strand, the bundle:

  • resists tangling under regular washing and styling

  • accepts color at lower developer volumes

  • holds its condition for 6–12 months of salon use

Raw Vietnamese hair keeps that cuticle layer intact from the donor all the way to the finished bundle. Nothing strips it. Nothing replaces it with silicone.

What happens to most processed hair instead

Most "premium" extensions sold online have gone through at least one of these steps:

  1. Acid bath — strips the cuticle entirely to make multi-donor hair feel uniform

  2. Silicone coating — applied to the shaft to restore the smoothness the acid removed

  3. Result — for 4–6 washes it feels great, then the silicone washes out and the tangling starts

With genuine raw Vietnamese hair, none of those steps happen. The texture you see at install is the texture the client keeps.

Our sourcing chain starts in rural northern Vietnam, with no broker in between.

We purchase hair directly from women in rural communities across northern Vietnam. These women traditionally grow their hair long and rarely use chemical treatments. The result is a naturally fine shaft with a strong, intact cuticle already in place before the hair ever reaches our factory.

After collection, every batch moves to our factory in Ninh Bình.

Two international broadcasters have documented this sourcing chain on camera:

  • Channel NewsAsia (CNA) — Singapore-based international broadcaster, visited our Hanoi HQ and AZ Hair factory

  • NPO Netherlands — Dutch public broadcaster, filmed the full production process end to end

Both features are public. That level of independent media verification is rare in this industry, where most "direct factories" are resellers working through 2–3 middlemen.

The 6-step process that keeps raw hair intact

What happens at the factory is where raw Vietnamese hair either stays raw or becomes something else.

Our 6-step production process runs in this exact order:

  1. Sourcing — raw Vietnamese hair collected from women in rural northern Vietnam

  2. Sorting and aligning — cuticles hand-sorted by direction, strand by strand

  3. Natural air drying — in a dedicated drying room, no heat, no chemicals

  4. Bleaching and coloring — done in-house, only for orders requiring color

  5. Quality inspection — every bundle checked before packaging

  6. Final production — cut and packed as extensions, bundles, or wigs

Why step 3 matters more than it looks

Chemical or heat drying at this stage compresses and damages the cuticle before the hair ever reaches the coloring step.

Drying in a controlled room takes longer. The hair that comes out arrives at step 4 with the cuticle completely intact. That's what makes in-house bleaching and custom color possible without compromising the final product.

For US and EU buyers: we ship you a physical color ring before the order is confirmed. You pick the shade. We match it. Most Vietnamese factories outsource this step. We don't.

Raw vs virgin vs remy: what the labels mean

These three terms appear in every hair vendor catalog and get used interchangeably. They're not interchangeable.

Type
Donor
Cuticle
Chemical treatment
Raw
Single
Intact, naturally aligned
None
Virgin
Single or multi
Intact, aligned
None
Remy
Multi (usually)
Aligned (may be acid-stripped)
Silicone coating common

The key differences:

  • Raw Vietnamese hair is the highest standard. Single-donor, nothing added, nothing removed.

  • Virgin hair is close, but can be multi-donor. Texture consistency is lower across strands.

  • Remy hair has aligned cuticles, but the alignment may be engineered through processing rather than natural.

At AZ Hair, we produce raw. We use "remy" only in comparison context, never to describe our own product.

How to verify a supplier is selling genuine raw Vietnamese hair

Raw Vietnamese hair carries a premium price. It's worth confirming you're actually getting it before you wire.

4 questions to ask any vendor before you order

1. Can you do a live factory video call right now? A real manufacturer can walk you through the floor any weekday. A reseller can't. If you get offered recorded footage instead of live, that tells you what you need to know.

2. How many years does your Alibaba Verified Supplier badge show? Longevity requires a real export history. Our badge shows 7 years. A new profile with no track record is a red flag regardless of how polished the listing looks.

3. Who handles the bleaching and coloring? If a factory sends hair to a third-party for color, they don't control that step. We do all color work in-house. Most Vietnamese suppliers don't have this capability.

4. Will you send a sample pack before I commit? Any manufacturer confident in their product will send samples. We send starter packs with the physical color ring so you can verify the color match before production starts.

What to expect when you install raw Vietnamese hair

Consistency, bundle to bundle. The source and the process are controlled, so the feel is uniform across every bundle. You don't need to blend or compensate the way you sometimes do with processed hair.

Better color uptake. The cuticle is intact going in. Developer volumes can run lower than on processed extensions. Less structural damage, better result.

Long lifespan. There's no silicone coating to degrade. Sew-in installs with proper aftercare typically run 6–12 months. Clip-in clients who maintain the extensions often get more.

At month 6, raw Vietnamese hair installed with correct technique looks close to what it looked like at install. When clients compare notes after the appointment, that staying power is what brings them back.

We've shipped raw Vietnamese bundles to salons and distributors across 50+ countries since 2018. The salons that stock raw Vietnamese hair tend to stay with it.

What is raw Vietnamese hair?

Raw Vietnamese hair is 100% human hair from a single donor, collected with the cuticle layer intact and naturally aligned from root to tip. No acid wash, no silicone coating, no chemical processing before it reaches you. The "raw" standard is what makes it perform longer than most alternatives at comparable price points.

How long does raw Vietnamese hair last?

With regular maintenance, sew-in installs typically hold 6–12 months in salon use. Clip-in clients with proper aftercare often get more. The intact cuticle is what drives that lifespan. Once a cuticle is stripped, no amount of conditioning restores the underlying structure.

What's the difference between raw Vietnamese hair and virgin hair?

Virgin hair is chemically untreated but can be multi-donor. Raw Vietnamese hair is single-donor and completely unprocessed. The distinction matters because single-donor hair has naturally consistent cuticle direction and texture across every strand in the bundle. Multi-donor virgin hair can tangle when cuticles from different sources don't run the same way.

Is raw Vietnamese hair good for color work?

Yes. Because the cuticle is intact, raw Vietnamese hair accepts developer at lower volumes than processed hair. You get better color uptake with less structural damage. We do all bleaching and dyeing in-house at our factory. US and EU buyers choose from a physical color ring we ship before the order is confirmed.

How do I know if a supplier is actually selling raw Vietnamese hair?

Ask for a live factory video call before you place any order. A real manufacturer can walk you through the floor any weekday. Check for multi-year Alibaba Verified Supplier status and Trade Assurance availability. Channel NewsAsia (CNA) and NPO Netherlands have both documented our facility on camera, and both broadcasts are public. That kind of independent verification is the clearest signal a vendor is who they say they are.
