14 Inch Hair: Where It Falls and Who Should Order It

14 inch hair sits around the collarbone on most frames. People order it when they want thicker hair at the shoulders, with a few extra inches as a bonus. At this length two inches either way changes the whole look, so it pays to measure before you order.

This guide covers where 14 inch hair lands by height, how it compares with 12 and 16 inches, how much to order, who it suits, and how we make it at our factory.

14 inch hair is 35.6 centimetres, measured from the top of the weft to the tip with the hair pulled straight. Some charts round it to 36 cm.

Factories measure the hair taut. You wear it relaxed, and it starts below the crown, where the weft, tape or clip sits. Both facts move the ends. Extensions fitted at ear level finish lower on the body than 14 inches of your own hair measured from the top of the head.

So measure on yourself. Hold a tape at the spot where the lowest row will sit and run it down to 35.6 cm. Do it once at the back and once over the shoulder to the front. Those two marks are your result.

These are estimates for straight hair. Neck length, shoulder width and row placement all shift the result by an inch or so.

Body wave pulls the ends up by about 1 to 2 inches once it dries, so 14 inch body wave reads closer to 12 or 13. If you want a wave to finish at the collarbone, order 16.

In extensions, 14 inches is on the short side. Most ranges run to 24 inches and beyond, and ours goes to 32. On a head it reads as medium: past the shoulders on most people, well short of the mid-back.

The two lengths next to it give very different results.

Pick 12 if the cut is a bob and you want it to stay one. Pick 14 if your own hair sits between the chin and the shoulders and you want it fuller and slightly longer. Pick 16 if you want people to notice the length.

Plan on two bundles of 14 inch hair for a full install. Our bundles are weighed at 100 grams when they're packed, so that's 200 grams. We don't have a tested gram range for this exact length. It sits between 12 inches, where a full head takes 100 to 200 grams, and 16 inches, where it takes 150 to 250.

Short hair is forgiving on weight. 100 grams spread over 14 inches leaves thick ends, where the same 100 grams over 22 inches leaves thin ones. Buyers who move down from 20 inches and keep ordering three bundles usually end up with more hair than the head needs.

One bundle is often enough when the goal is thickness only and your own hair already reaches the collarbone. Your stylist sets the final amount after seeing the hair.

Three groups get the most out of 14 inch hair.

• Short hair that needs thickness. If your own hair ends between the chin and the shoulders, 14 inches blends into it without a visible step. Long extensions on short hair show the join.
• Fine hair. Shorter hair weighs less per row, so each section of natural hair carries less. Our guide to extensions for fine hair covers how much weight thin hair can take.
• Long bob clients. A lob that has grown out, or one that was cut too short, gets its shape back with 14 inches.

Short lengths are harder to find on a shelf than long ones. In a Facebook group for hair extension buyers, one UK member looking for 12 and 14 inch hair wrote this week that "most places only stock minimum 18 inch" (post seen 5 October 2026). Our own ready-to-ship line starts at 16 inches. So expect 14 inches to be made to order when you buy from us.

Choose a longer length if you're above 5'8" and want the ends past the collarbone, or if you're testing a new vendor. A thin tail has very little room to show at 14 inches, so a short sample tells you less about the grade than a 20 inch one does.

Our standard range runs from 8 to 32 inches, so 14 inches is a normal production length for us.

It is made to order. Production takes 10 to 12 working days at 14 inches, in any colour, texture or method. The one line we ship in 1 to 2 days is our ready-to-ship natural black machine weft, and that line covers 16 to 26 inches only.

The testing minimum is one bundle at 100 grams, sold at the normal price. The sample and the minimum order are the same thing. Prices change, so they live on the product pages and stay off the blog.
