How Long Is 18 Inch Hair? Where It Falls and What It Weighs
Buyers order 18 inch hair, unwrap it, hold it against a ruler and decide something went wrong. Usually nothing did. The gap sits between how a factory measures a bundle and how that bundle behaves once it is on a head.
This covers where the length actually lands by height and by texture, how many grams it takes to keep the ends thick, which attachment method suits it, and what moves the price on a quote.
18 inch hair measures 45.7 cm pulled straight and falls at mid-back on someone around 5'5". Height moves it. Curl pattern moves it more.
What this guide covers
How long is 18 inch hair
18 inch hair is 45.7 centimetres, measured with the strand pulled fully straight.
The part almost nobody explains is where the measurement starts. On extensions it runs from the top of the weft, the top of the tape tab, or the base of the bond, down to the tip. It does not start at your crown. So an 18 inch weft sewn in three inches down from your parting will end lower than 18 inches from the top of your head, and a clip-in set placed higher will end higher.
That single detail is behind most of the "this looks shorter than I ordered" messages we get.
Take a tape measure to your own head before you order anything. Start where the wefts will actually sit, run it down your back, mark 45.7 cm. That is your answer, and it beats every length chart on the internet including this one.
Is 18 inch hair considered long?
18 inches sits at the top of the medium range. It is longer than 16 inches, which lands around the shoulder blades, and shorter than 20 inches, which reaches the lower back.
In practice most people read it as long hair. It clears the shoulders by a wide margin and sits in the zone people describe as bra-strap length. What it avoids is the maintenance load that starts at 24 inches and up, where the ends need real attention to stay presentable.
Where 18 inch hair falls by height
Height is the single biggest variable after texture. The same weft lands in a different place on a 5'2" frame than a 5'9" one, and the difference is visible enough that two people can order the same length and describe it completely differently.
| Height | Where straight 18 inch hair lands | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5'2" (157 cm) | Lower mid-back | Very long |
| 5'2" to 5'4" (157 to 163 cm) | Mid-back | Long |
| 5'5" to 5'7" (165 to 170 cm) | Mid-back to bra strap | Long, the most common result |
| 5'8" to 5'9" (173 to 175 cm) | Just below the shoulder blades | Medium to long |
| 5'10" and above (178 cm+) | Upper mid-back | Medium |
Torso length shifts this too. Two people at the same height with different torso proportions get different results, which is why the tape measure test beats the table.

If you are above 5'8" and you want the ends to sit at true mid-back, order 20 inches. The full chart from 8 to 32 inches is in our guide on how to choose the right length of hair extensions.
Where 18 inch hair falls by texture
Curl pattern removes visible length without changing the measurement. Pull an 18 inch curly strand straight against a ruler and it still reads 45.7 cm. Let it go and it sits several inches higher. The strand coils, and every coil eats hanging length.
This works the same way on extensions as it does on your own hair.
Straight 18 inch hair
Straight is the only texture where the label and the result match. 18 inches measured is 18 inches worn, minus whatever your install height adds or subtracts.
It falls at mid-back to bra strap on an average frame. Bone straight and yaki straight behave the same way here. This is the texture to pick if you want the number on the packet to mean something on the day it arrives.
Wavy 18 inch hair
Body wave loses roughly 1 to 2 inches of visible length. An 18 inch body wave install reads closer to 16 or 17 inches once it is dry and the S-pattern has settled.
Loose wave sits at the lower end of that range, around an inch. Tighter wave patterns take closer to two. To land at a visible 18 inches in a wavy texture, order 20.
Curly 18 inch hair
Deep wave and loose curly lose roughly 3 to 4 inches. Kinky curly can take 5 to 6 inches off, depending on how tight the coil sits.
An 18 inch kinky curly install can read as 12 or 13 inches on the head, which is a big enough gap that buyers assume they were shorted. Nothing was shorted. To finish at a visible 18 inches on a tight curl pattern, order 22 to 24 inches and let the shrinkage bring it back.
| Texture | Rough visible loss | Reads as | Order this to land at 18" |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight | None | 18 inches | 18 inch |
| Body wave | 1 to 2 inches | 16 to 17 inches | 20 inch |
| Deep wave, loose curly | 3 to 4 inches | 14 to 15 inches | 22 inch |
| Kinky curly | 5 to 6 inches | 12 to 13 inches | 22 to 24 inch |

There is a test for this that costs nothing and settles it for the exact hair you are holding. Wet a section of the sample. Let it dry with no product in it. Pull one curl straight against a ruler, read it, then let it go and read where the end actually sits. The gap between those two numbers is your shrinkage. Do it once and you never guess again.
18 inch compared with 16 and 20
These three lengths cover most of what US and EU salons book, so the choice usually comes down to which of the three.
| 16 inch | 18 inch | 20 inch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centimetres | 41 cm | 45.7 cm | 51 cm |
| Lands at 5'5" | Below the shoulder blades | Mid-back | Lower back |
| Grams for a full install | 150 to 250 g | 200 to 300 g | 250 to 350 g |
| Daily upkeep | Low | Low to moderate | Moderate |
| Best for | Fine hair, first install, low effort | Most first-time buyers, core salon stock | Height above 5'8", or a dramatic change |
18 inch vs 16 inch
Two inches sounds like nothing and looks like a lot. 16 inches sits at or just below the shoulder blades, which reads as a long bob on a taller frame. 18 clears into mid-back and reads unambiguously as long hair.
16 is the safer pick for fine natural hair, because there is less weight pulling on each attachment point and less strand length to keep smooth. 18 is the pick when the client wants people to notice.
18 inch vs 20 inch
20 inches reaches the lower back and needs 250 to 350 grams to keep the ends thick, which is one more bundle in most cases. It also asks for more work: more brushing time, longer drying, more attention at the ends.
Go to 20 if the client is above 5'8", or if they are wearing a curly texture and want it to finish at mid-back. Stay at 18 for everyone else. The step up from here is covered in our guide to 22 inch hair extensions.
How many grams of 18 inch hair you need
A full head of 18 inch hair usually takes 200 to 300 grams. An AZ Hair bundle is weighed at 100 grams when it is packed, so that is two to three bundles.
This is the question the length guides skip, and it is the one that decides whether the finished install looks good.
| Result you want | Total weight | Bundles at 100g | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Added length, own hair still visible | 100 g | 1 | Fine to medium density, blending only |
| Standard full install | 200 g | 2 | Most sew-ins run with a closure |
| Full through to the ends | 300 g | 3 | Medium to thick natural hair |
| Heavy density, room for layering | 400 g | 4 | Thick natural hair, or a layered cut |
Gram weight matters more at 18 inches than it does at 12 or 14. The same 100 grams spread down a longer strand leaves thinner ends. A single bundle that looks dense at 14 inches looks sparse at 24, and 18 sits close enough to the middle that buyers get caught out in both directions.

Weight and drawn type are two different things
Buyers mix these constantly, and it costs them money when they compare quotes.
Weight is how much hair is in the bundle. Drawn type is how the lengths are distributed inside it. A single drawn bundle holds a wide mix of lengths, so the tail narrows to a point. A double drawn bundle has had the short hair pulled out, so the tail stays close to the width of the middle. Both can weigh exactly 100 grams and sit completely differently in your hand.
That sorting is done by hand and it is why the grades are priced apart. The full breakdown of what gets removed is in double drawn hair.
If you are choosing between grades, order more than one. Buy an 18 inch bundle in two or three grades from the same vendor at the same time and put them side by side. That is the only way to learn what a specific factory means by its own grade names, because there is no outside body defining them. Every factory writes its own.
Not sure how many grams your install needs?
Send the natural hair density, the finished look, and whether you are running a closure. We will tell you the bundle count before you order.
18 inch by attachment method
18 inches works across every method, and the method changes how the weight sits more than the length does.
1. Machine weft The workhorse for sew-ins and the format most salons stock at this length. Sold by the 100 gram bundle, so the gram table above applies directly.
2. Tape-in At 18 inches the tabs stay light enough to lie flat against the head. Much past 22 inches and the weight starts pulling at the tab. Browse tape-in extensions.
3. Keratin, nano tip and micro loop Individual strands, so density comes from strand count. Bundle weight tells you nothing here. Ask for the gram weight per pack and the number of strands, because packs vary between suppliers. See nano tip extensions.
4. Clip-in The set weight matters more than the length. An 18 inch set that is too light looks thin at the ends no matter how well it is clipped in. Browse clip-in extensions.
5. Ponytail 18 inches gives a ponytail that still falls well below the shoulder blades when it is pulled up, which is why it is a common length for this format.
18 inch wigs
On a wig, 18 inches is measured from the top of the cap down to the tip, so it lands slightly higher on the body than an 18 inch sew-in placed a few inches down from the parting.
Density is the number that decides how a wig looks, more than length does. Ask for the density percentage and the cap construction before you ask about anything else.
How to read a video of 18 inch hair
A video of someone holding the bundle tells you more about the hair than any document a vendor can send you.
We closed an order with a buyer in the UK last summer. Before she paid, she asked for a video of someone holding the hair, any colour, she did not mind which. Three messages, all about the video. Paperwork never came up once.
She asked three times.

Two things to watch when you get one.
Watch the tail. Run your eye to the last two inches of the bundle and count how much hair is still there. On a double drawn bundle the ends stay close to the width of the middle. On single drawn the tail narrows to a point, which is normal for that grade and is priced accordingly.
Then watch the stroke down. When the hand runs from the weft to the tip, thin hair separates into visible sections and shows daylight between them. Dense hair moves as one piece and closes back up after the hand passes.

Ask for the video of the batch you are being sold, filmed that week. Batch two is where wholesale relationships end. A salon that has already installed batch one on a paying client has no way to explain to that client why the second lot feels different, and that salon does not place a third order. Consistency between batches is the thing to measure a vendor on, and a bundle video from the current run is the cheapest way to keep checking it.
What moves the price of 18 inch hair
Five things set the number on an 18 inch quote: length, drawn type, texture, colour, and quantity.
Length is the obvious one, and 18 inches sits in the affordable half of the range. Drawn type usually moves the price more than the length does at this size, because double drawn and super double drawn require hand sorting that discards a real share of every batch. Texture adds a processing step. Colour adds several, and lifted shades add the most, because someone has to sit and pull the damaged and off-colour strands out of a bundle that has already been bleached.
We do not publish a price list on the blog, and any figure you read on a competitor's guide page is a range wide enough to be useless for your actual order. Send the spec and the quantity and you get the real number.
How AZ Hair makes 18 inch hair
The hair is cut from women in northern Vietnam. We buy it, sort it, and process it in our own factory.
18 inches sits comfortably inside the standard range. Production runs 8 inches to 32 inches, with 34 and 36 inches made on request, though stock is limited at those two lengths and lead time runs longer.
- Ready to ship, 1 to 2 days Natural black machine weft, 16 to 26 inches, 100 grams, in double drawn and super double drawn.
- Made to order, 10 to 12 working days Everything outside that list. Tell us the texture and colour before you pay and we will say which bucket your order falls into.
- Testing minimum, 1 bundle at 100g At normal price. The sample and the minimum order are the same thing, which is deliberate.
Sorting is step two of our 6-step production process.
Channel NewsAsia filmed inside the factory. NPO Netherlands filmed there as well. Both broadcasts are public.
There is a limit to what any of that proves, and it is worth saying plainly. We can show you the sorting floor, the drying racks and the finished bundle. We cannot show you a certificate that says one donor, and neither can anyone else in this industry.
18 inch hair, frequently asked
What does 18 inches of hair look like?
On most people 18 inches falls at mid-back, roughly level with the bottom of the shoulder blades and around the bra strap line. Straight textures show the full length. Wavy and curly textures sit 1 to 6 inches higher once the hair is dry and the curl has closed up.
How long is 18 inch hair in cm?
18 inch hair is 45.7 centimetres. That measurement is taken with the hair pulled straight, from the top of the weft, tape tab or bond down to the tip.
Is 18 inch hair considered long?
Yes, at the upper end of medium. It clears the shoulders by a wide margin and reads as long hair on almost every frame. True long territory starts around 20 inches, where the ends reach the lower back.
How many bundles do I need for 18 inch hair?
Two to three bundles for a full install, at 100 grams each. Two covers most sew-ins run with a closure. Three is the safer order for thick natural hair or if you want density all the way to the ends.
Is 18 inch hair too long for a 5'2 person?
No. On a 5'2 frame 18 inches lands at lower mid-back and reads as long hair. Buyers at this height who want the ends to sit higher usually order 16 inches.
Does 18 inch curly hair look shorter?
Yes. A deep wave or curly pattern at 18 inches typically reads 3 to 6 inches shorter once dry. To finish at a visible 18 inches on a tight curl, order 22 to 24 inches.
Are 18 inch extensions good for short hair?
They work, and texture helps. On natural hair shorter than about 10 inches, a wavy or curly 18 inch extension blends more easily than a straight one, because texture hides the point where the natural ends stop. Layering the extension ends during the install does the rest.
Is 18 inch hair long enough for a ponytail?
Yes on straight and body wave. Pulled up, 18 inch hair still falls well below the shoulder blades on most frames. On a tight curl pattern the ponytail sits closer to shoulder length once the curl closes.
The short version
18 inches is 45.7 cm on a ruler and mid-back on a person around 5'5". Measure from where the weft will sit, not from your crown. Two bundles for a standard install, three if you want density to the ends. Curl pattern takes inches off, and one wash cycle tells you exactly how many on the hair in your hand.
