18 Inch Hair: Where It Falls, What It Weighs, Who It Suits

Buyers order 18 inch hair, unwrap it, hold it against a ruler and decide something went wrong. Usually nothing did. The gap sits between how a factory measures a bundle and how that bundle behaves once it is on a head, and almost nobody explains it before you pay.

This covers three things: where 18 inches actually lands on a person, how many grams it takes to keep the ends thick, and how to read a video of the hair before money moves.

18 inch hair is 45.7 centimetres, measured from the top of the weft or the base of the clip down to the tip, with the hair pulled straight.

That last clause carries more weight than the number does. Factories measure taut. You wear it relaxed. Any wave in the hair at all and the ends sit higher than the tape measure promised.

Take a tape measure to your own head before you order. Start at the crown, run it down your back, and mark 45.7 cm. That mark is roughly where the ends will sit.

Where 18 inch hair falls by height

Frame changes the answer more than most buyers expect.

1. Under 5'3" Lower mid-back. On a shorter frame this length reads as genuinely long.
2. 5'3" to 5'7" Clean mid-back. This is the most common result and the one most product photos show.
3. 5'8" and above Upper to mid back. Buyers at this height who want dramatic length usually move to 20 or 22 inches.

How 18 inch hair compares with the lengths around it

Curl pattern removes visible length. Straight hair shows the full 45.7 cm. Every wave pattern above that reads shorter once the hair dries and the curl closes up.

There is a test for this that costs nothing. Wet a section of the sample, let it dry with no product in it, then pull one curl straight against a ruler and let it go. The gap between the two readings is your shrinkage on that specific hair. Do it once and you stop guessing.

For a client with a tight natural pattern who wants a finished look at mid-back, most stylists order 20 or 22 inches and let the shrinkage bring it back to 18.

A full head of 18 inch hair usually takes 200 to 300 grams. An AZ Hair bundle is weighed at 100 grams when it is packed, so that comes out at two to three bundles.

Gram weight matters more at 18 inches than it does at 12 or 14. The same 100 grams spread down a longer strand leaves thinner ends. A single bundle that looks dense at 14 inches will look sparse at 24, and 18 sits close enough to the middle that buyers get caught out both ways.

18 inch hair suits first-time extension buyers and salons building a short core stock list.

1. First-time buyers The length changes the look while staying inside what most people will actually maintain day to day. 24 and 26 inches ask for more work.
2. Protective installs on natural hair At shoulder length or below, 18 inches blends across most textures without a hard line at the join.
3. Salons carrying three lengths If you stock three, 18 inches earns one of the three slots alongside 20 and 22.
4. Tape and clip wearers The wefts stay light enough at this length to sit flat against the head, which is why 18 is one of the more common orders in both clip-in extensions and tape-in extensions.

A video of someone holding the bundle tells you more about the hair than any document a vendor can send you.

We closed an order with a buyer in the UK last summer. Before she paid, she asked for a video of someone holding the hair, any colour, she did not mind which. Three messages, all about the video. Paperwork never came up once.

She asked three times.

Two things to watch when you get one.

Watch the tail. Run your eye to the last two inches of the bundle and count how much hair is still there. On a double drawn bundle the ends stay close to the width of the middle. On single drawn the tail narrows to a point, which is normal for that grade and is priced accordingly.

Then watch the stroke down. When the hand runs from the weft to the tip, thin hair separates into visible sections and shows daylight between them. Dense hair moves as one piece and closes back up after the hand passes.

The hair is cut from women in northern Vietnam. We buy it, sort it, and process it in our own factory.

18 inches sits comfortably inside the standard range. Production runs 8 inches to 32 inches, with 34 and 36 inches made on request, though stock is limited at those two lengths and lead time runs longer.
