Bone Straight Hair: How It Is Made and What It Costs

Bone Straight Hair: How It Is Made and What It Costs

Bone straight hair is human hair processed to a flat, uniform straightness that survives washing. It describes a finish, not an origin. Every bone straight bundle on the market has been through heat, steam, or a chemical straightening pass somewhere in production.

That last sentence is where most vendor pages go quiet. Bone straight sells, so the word gets stuck onto hair that is also being sold as raw, and those two claims pull against each other.

We run the straightening step at our own factory. So this page covers what actually happens to the hair, what it does to the price, and how to read a listing that claims both things at once.

100% Raw Vietnamese Human Hair

What bone straight hair actually is

Flat from root to tip. No bend, no swell in humidity, no variation between one strand and the next.

The real test is what happens after a wash. Bone straight dries flat and needs no restyling. Hair that is straight because the donor’s hair was straight will dry back into its own pattern, and that pattern always has some movement in it.

A finish applied at the factory

Straightness on a bundle comes from one of two places. The donor, or the factory.

Vietnamese donor hair runs from straight to slightly wavy. Even the straightest head of it keeps a small bend and some strand-to-strand variation, because that is what hair growing out of a scalp does. Bone straight has none of that. The uniformity is the giveaway.

How bone straight is produced

Production adds one step to a normal bundle run. After sorting and cuticle alignment, the hair goes onto tension racks and takes controlled heat and steam until the strand holds flat on its own.

Some factories add a relaxer or a keratin-type smoothing agent so the finish holds longer. Others use heat alone, and that version softens sooner. Both are sold under the same two words.

AZ Hair Vietnam is a direct manufacturer with our own factory and our HQ in Hanoi. No middleman, no resellers, no markup layers. The practical value of that here is narrow and specific: we can tell you which method your bundles went through, because we are the ones who ran it. A reseller is repeating what a factory told them.

Channel NewsAsia and NPO Netherlands have both filmed inside our factory. Both broadcasts are public: AZ Hair on Channel NewsAsia and our NPO Netherlands feature.

The full sequence is in our 6-step production process. If you want the floor itself, watch our factory tour.

What happens to the cuticle

Heat and tension press the cuticle scales flat against the shaft. That is where the shine comes from.

It also spends part of the hair’s tolerance for future processing. Hair that has been straightened hard lifts less predictably under bleach than hair that arrived straight on its own. The cuticle is still there and still running one direction, so the bundle will not tangle. It has just used some of its budget before you got it.

Why raw and bone straight cannot both be true out of the box

Raw hair means unprocessed. Heat straightening is processing. A bundle that arrives bone straight went through a step; a bundle that is genuinely raw arrives with whatever pattern the donor had.

Plenty of sellers square this honestly by saying the input was raw single-donor hair and the output is bone straight. That is a fair description of a real product. The problem is a listing that says ‘raw bone straight’ and never mentions the step in between.

Ask one question. Any vendor selling you bone straight raw hair is selling you two things that cannot both be true. Ask them which one it is. A factory will answer in one sentence.

Neither is the better product. They are different jobs.

A distributor selling into a market that wants a sleek finish straight out of the pack should stock bone straight. A distributor whose salons color everything they install should stock natural straight and let the stylist decide what happens next. Our own texture range and where bone straight sits inside it is covered in Vietnamese textures beyond bone straight.

What bone straight hair costs

Bone straight costs more than natural straight from the same factory at the same length. Two things drive the gap.

The first is the extra production step. Heat, steam, tension and the labour to run them get added to a bundle that was already finished.

The second is loss. Hair breaks under tension, and what breaks comes out of the bundle. The factory makes the weight back up from the same batch, so a 100g bone straight bundle eats more than 100g of input hair before it reaches the wrapper.

Length compounds both. A 30 inch bundle sits under tension longer than an 18 inch bundle and loses more on the way through, so the price curve steepens at the top of our 8 to 32 inch range. Drawn type moves it again, and double drawn bone straight is usually the most expensive combination on a factory price list, because both processes take hair out.

We do not publish a price list on this blog. Wholesale volume gets a better per-unit price, so send your quantity on WhatsApp for the tier.

Run these questions on any bone straight sample, including ours. Ask what set the straightness. Ask whether a relaxer was used. Ask what the bundle weighed before the step and after it. You can see current stock in bone straight bundles.

Which markets buy bone straight

We have shipped to salons, wholesalers, and distributors in 50+ countries since founding. Top markets right now are the US, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, and Nigeria. Africa moves the highest unit volume; the US and EU move the highest revenue per shipment.

Bone straight sells in all of them, for different reasons.

West Africa

Nigeria is one of our top markets, and bone straight is what buyers there ask for by name. Most are reselling to end consumers and small salons. The decision gets made on price, bundle weight and length, in that order.

Hair that arrives sleek and stays sleek without a salon appointment moves fast in that market. Short lengths sell alongside long ones, and reorders come back quickly on whatever the last batch was, so the pressure sits on batch-to-batch consistency.

United States

US salons and Black stylists buy bone straight for installs where every bundle in a client’s head has to match every other bundle. Consistency is the whole ask.

This segment pays more for hair that holds up on the client, and it tests before it commits. One bundle first, then ten. Our bone straight wigs sell into the same buyers who are stocking bundles.

UK and EU

Distributors in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and France buy in larger blocks and care about two things: the same product every time, and a lead time that does not slip. They are de-risking a supplier relationship, and at that order size price is a second-order question.

A texture that depends on a factory process is exactly where an unreliable supplier gets found out. If the straightening is outsourced, the distributor is buying from a chain they cannot see, and the batch that arrives in March will not match the one from January.

Care and lifespan

Bone straight holds its shape because the strand was set. It loses that shape the same way it got it, through heat and friction.

Wash every one to two weeks with a sulfate-free shampoo. Air dry where you can. Keep the flat iron off it unless the ends have started to separate, because every pass spends more of what the hair has left. Silk or satin at night.

Lifespan claims in this category are all self-published and none of them are audited. The wigihair.com bone straight guide, published 1 October 2025, puts Remy bone straight at 9 to 12 months with proper care. Treat that as a seller estimate, because that is what it is.

The honest answer is that lifespan depends on how much heat the hair took in the factory and how much it takes afterwards, and a buyer only finds that out by running one bundle through a full season.

Color is the other question. Bone straight can be bleached, it just has less headroom than hair that arrived straight, and lifting to a light blonde is where it fails first. We do the bleaching and coloring in-house. Most Vietnamese factories don’t, which is why custom colors are hard to find at this quality tier.

How to order

Minimum for testing is one 100g bundle at normal price. That is the sample, and it is a full bundle. We do not sell cut 10g samples.

Our numbers: in-stock lengths ship in 1 to 2 days. Custom production runs 10 to 12 working days, and custom color adds to that. Standard production covers 8" to 32". We can do 34" and 36", but stock is limited and lead time is longer, so confirm with the team before you order those.

Frequently asked questions

Is bone straight hair raw?

No. Raw means unprocessed, and bone straight is produced by heat, steam or a chemical straightener. The input hair can be raw single-donor hair. The bundle you receive has been processed.

Is bone straight the same as silky straight?

They overlap and vendors use them loosely. Silky straight usually describes a softer finish with a little movement left in it. Bone straight is the flatter, more rigid end of the same scale. Ask for video of a washed sample. The words are unreliable.

Does bone straight hair revert after washing?

Good bone straight dries flat and needs no restyling. If a bundle waves up after two or three washes, the straightening was set with heat alone and it is relaxing back toward the donor pattern.

How long does bone straight hair last?

Depends on how hard it was processed and how much heat you add after. The wigihair.com guide from 1 October 2025 says 9 to 12 months for Remy bone straight with care, which is a seller number and not audited by anyone. Run a bundle for a season before you plan around a figure.

Why is bone straight hair more expensive?

An extra production step, plus the hair lost to breakage under tension. Longer lengths lose more, and double drawn bone straight loses most of all, since both processes pull hair out of the bundle.

Can bone straight hair be bleached?

Yes, with less headroom than unprocessed hair. Dark and mid-tone colors are safe. Light blonde is where straightened hair usually gives out. We color in-house, so send the target shade before you order and we will tell you whether it holds.

Which is better, bone straight or natural straight?

Whichever matches what your clients do. Bone straight for a sleek finish that needs no work. Natural straight for color work and for clients who want the hair to move.

What lengths does bone straight come in?

8" to 32" as standard. 34" and 36" on request, with limited stock and a longer lead time.

What is the minimum order for bone straight hair?

One 100g bundle at normal price for testing. Wholesale minimums are higher and the per-unit price improves with quantity, so send your quantity on WhatsApp and we will give you the tier.

How long does production take?

1 to 2 days for in-stock lengths. 10 to 12 working days for custom production.
