Hand Tied Weft Extensions: What to Check Before You Order

Hand Tied Weft Extensions: What to Check Before You Order

A machine runs a weft in under a minute. A hand tied weft of the same width takes a worker a long shift to finish, and the worker has to be good at it. That gap is the whole economics of this product, and almost nobody selling them says it out loud.

Hand tied weft extensions are wefts with the hair knotted onto the seam by hand, one small section at a time. The seam comes out thin and flat, which is why stylists sew them onto beaded rows. They cost more because a person makes each one.

We make both hand tied and machine weft in our factory in Vietnam and ship to salons and distributors in 50+ countries, so the price gap shows up on our own production sheets before it ever reaches a salon price list.

01

What a hand tied weft actually is

In one line A weft is a curtain of hair fixed along one edge, and how that edge gets made is the only thing separating the three types on the market.

The fixed edge is the seam. Three ways exist to build one.

  • Machine weft The hair is fed through a sewing machine that stitches a double or triple row. Fast, strong, and the seam is thick enough to feel through fine hair.
  • Hand tied weft A worker knots small sections of hair onto a thread, one section at a time, building the seam by hand. The result is a fraction of the thickness.
  • Genius weft Hand tied along the top with the return hair trimmed off, so the panel can be cut to any width without unravelling.

The knot pattern is the part buyers never see and never ask about. It decides whether the weft holds after six months of washing or starts shedding at week four.

By hand. One section at a time. No machine does that part.

Hand tied vs machine weft vs genius weft

In one line The cutting rule is the difference that costs salons money.
Type Seam thickness Can it be cut? Best use
Hand tied Thinnest No, it unravels at the cut Beaded rows on fine to medium hair
Genius Thin, no return hair Yes, anywhere along the panel Rows that need custom widths
Machine Thickest Yes, with sealing Sew-ins, wigs, thicker hair

A traditional hand tied weft cannot be cut horizontally across the seam. Cut it and the knots release. Google's AI Overview for this search flagged the same point on 11 September 2026, citing two stylist videos. No manufacturer appears anywhere in that citation list.

So a salon ordering hand tied has to order the widths it plans to install. A salon ordering genius weft buys one width and cuts to fit. That single difference changes how much stock a salon carries, and it is worth more than any grade name on the packaging.

For the wider comparison across attachment methods, we covered it in our weft vs tape-in extensions guide.

What hand tied weft extensions cost

In one line A weft is not a standard unit, so two quoted prices rarely describe the same thing.

Retail prices on page one of Google for this term, pulled 11 September 2026: The Hair Shop lists single wefts from $8 to $54, Habit Hair X lists a set at $205.80, JZ Styles lists $210 to $290, and Laced Hair lists $420 to $1,340. All four are self-published shop prices, not audited figures, and they cover different quantities. Read them as the span of the market and nothing tighter than that.

That spread tells you something real. One brand sells a single 11-inch panel, another sells a full multi-row set, and both call it a price.

Three things move the number: how many grams are on the panel, the drawn type, and how long the hair is. Ask which of the three a quoted price refers to before comparing two vendors.

Drawn type matters more here than most buyers expect, because a hand tied seam is thin and any weight imbalance shows at the ends. We wrote about that in detail in our double drawn hair guide.

Factory side

We do not publish our wholesale prices on the blog. They move with length, color work, and volume, and a number posted in September is wrong by spring. Send a quantity on WhatsApp and you get the current sheet.

04

How long hand tied wefts last

In one line Two clocks run at once, and buyers keep mixing them up.

The install clock. Blondify Studio, one of the salon pages Google cited in its AI Overview on 11 September 2026, puts move-ups at every 4 to 6 weeks, with a full removal and reinstall at roughly 2.5 months. That is a salon's own published schedule, not an independently audited figure. It tracks how fast the client's own hair grows. The weft has nothing to do with that number.

The hair clock. How long the weft itself stays usable depends on the hair and on whether the seam holds. A weft that sheds at the seam is finished regardless of how good the hair is.

Here is the honest version: we cannot tell you a lifespan number for our own wefts, because we do not have audited wear data and neither does anyone else selling this product. What we can tell you is what to look at, which is the next section.

Six questions to ask before you order

In one line The last one separates a factory from a reseller faster than any certificate.

These come in the order buyers actually ask them.

  1. How many grams is one weft, weighed at packing?
  2. What length is the panel, edge to edge?
  3. Is the seam hand tied all the way across, or hand tied at the ends and machine sewn in the middle?
  4. What drawn type, and what does that mean in your factory's own terms?
  5. Can you film this batch this week, hands in shot, natural light, no music?
  6. What happens if batch two does not match batch one?

Question five is the one that works. A UK buyer who ordered from us this summer asked three times for a video of someone holding the hair before paying, and never once asked for a certificate. Buyers trust hands more than paper, and they are right to.

Question three catches a common practice. A weft sold as hand tied is sometimes hand tied only where a buyer is likely to inspect it. Ask for a close video of the middle of the seam.

Where the hair comes from, and what we can prove

In one lineWe can show you the floor. We cannot show you a donor certificate, and neither can anyone else.
Factory side

The hair is cut from women in northern Vietnam. We buy it, sort it, and process it in our own factory, with our HQ in Hanoi. From there it runs through our 6-step production process: sourcing, sorting and cuticle alignment, air drying, bleaching and coloring, inspection, then production of the finished weft. The tying happens at that last step, by workers who do only that.

Two international broadcasters have filmed inside that factory. Channel NewsAsia shot there, and NPO Netherlands shot there for a consumer investigation program. Both broadcasts are public.

We can show you the sorting floor, the drying racks and the finished bundle. We cannot show you a certificate that says one donor, and neither can anyone else in this industry.

We have also held Alibaba Verified Supplier status for 7 years, so a first order can ship through Trade Assurance if escrow makes the decision easier.

Ordering hand tied wefts wholesale

In one line Hand tied is made to order, 10 to 12 working days, and anyone quoting three days is holding someone else's stock.

Standard production runs 8 to 32 inches. We make 34 and 36 inches on request, though stock is limited and lead time is longer.

  • Ready to ship Machine weft in natural black, 16 to 26 inches. Leaves Hanoi in 1 to 2 days.
  • Made to order Everything else, hand tied included. 10 to 12 working days at the factory.
  • Testing minimum One bundle, 100 grams, at the normal price. The sample and the smallest order are the same thing.

Custom color runs in house. Most Vietnamese factories only sell natural black and send color work outside, which is why a matched root shadow on a hand tied weft is hard to source. Buyers pick from a physical color ring we ship before the order is confirmed.

Our hand-tied weft hair and machine weft collections are online, and volume pricing improves with quantity.

Frequently asked questions

How long do hand tied wefts last?

The install needs a move-up every 4 to 6 weeks and a full reinstall around 2.5 months, per the salon schedules published on page one of Google as of 11 September 2026. How long the weft itself lasts depends on the hair quality and whether the seam holds, and no audited figure exists for that.

How much do hand tied weft extensions typically cost?

Retail listings on page one ranged from $8 for a single panel to $1,340 for a full set on 11 September 2026. Check the packed gram weight and the panel length before you compare any two prices. Drawn type moves the number as well, further than the brand name does.

What are the best hand tied weft extensions?

The ones whose second batch matches the first. Ask any supplier how the seam is built and what a panel weighs at packing. Then ask for video of the batch they would ship you this week. Then order twice and compare the two in your hand.

What's the difference between hand tied and sew-in extensions?

A sew-in is the installation method, where a weft is sewn onto a braid or a beaded row. Hand tied describes how the weft itself was built. A hand tied weft is usually installed as a sew-in, so the two terms often appear together.

Can hand tied wefts be cut?

Traditional hand tied wefts cannot be cut across the seam without the knots releasing. Genius wefts can be cut anywhere along the panel, which is why salons that want one stock width order genius.

What is the MOQ for wholesale hand tied wefts?

Testing starts at one bundle of 100 grams at the normal price. Wholesale volume gets a better per-unit price. Send your quantity on WhatsApp for the tier.

The short version

Hand tied weft extensions are worth the money when the seam is genuinely tied all the way across and the batch repeats. Weigh a panel when it arrives. Ask for video of the middle of the seam. Order the widths you plan to install, because you cannot cut them later.

Then order a second time and compare the two in one hand. That is the only test in this industry that means anything.

Next step

Send three things. Get a real quote.
