How to Remove Tape In Extensions Without Losing Hair

How to Remove Tape In Extensions Without Losing Hair

Most tape-in damage happens during removal. Tabs pulled apart dry take natural hair with them. Tabs that are soaked and given time slide off clean.

To remove tape in extensions, soak each tape bond with an adhesive remover or an oil, wait for the glue to soften, then open the two tabs with the tail of a comb and slide the weft off. Comb out any leftover glue and wash twice with a clarifying shampoo. Nothing should need a pull.

This guide covers what you need, the steps in order, which removers work, what causes damage, and how to get the wefts ready to go back in.

How to remove tape in extensions with remover and a tail comb

01

What you need to remove tape in extensions

You can do the whole job with things most salons and many bathrooms already have.

  • Remover or oil. A tape-in adhesive remover, or a plain oil such as coconut, olive or baby oil.
  • Rat-tail comb. The tail opens the tabs. The teeth catch leftover glue.
  • Sectioning clips. Enough to keep every row you're not working on out of the way.
  • Clarifying shampoo. Oil and remover leave a film that a normal shampoo won't lift.
  • A towel and a flat surface. For laying the wefts out as they come off, in the order they came out.

Keep the wefts in order. If they're going back in, the stylist will want them in the same rows.

How to remove tape in extensions, step by step

In one line Soften, wait, open, slide. If a tab resists, add more remover and wait again.
  1. Clip all the hair up and start at the nape. Work one row at a time from the bottom up, so the rows above stay out of the way.
  2. Soak the tape bond. Apply remover or oil to the top and underside of each tape sandwich, right on the tab.
  3. Wait. How long depends on the product. Indique tells readers to leave its remover 30 to 60 seconds (4 June 2025). Perfect Locks says 10 to 15 minutes (23 March 2026). Plain oil takes longer, 15 to 30 minutes in Indique's guide. Read the label on whatever you use.
  4. Open the tabs. Slide the tail of the comb between the two tapes at one corner and ease them apart. If they stick, add more remover and wait again.
  5. Slide the weft down and off the natural hair. Lay it flat on the towel.
  6. Comb the root area of that section with the fine teeth to catch any glue left behind. A drop of oil loosens stubborn spots.
  7. When every row is out, wash twice with clarifying shampoo, then condition.

What dissolves the glue when you remove tape in extensions

Three kinds of product loosen tape-in adhesive. Each one trades speed for cleanup.

Tape-in remover Oil (coconut, olive, baby oil) Rubbing alcohol
Speed Fastest Slowest Fast
Wait time in published guides 30 seconds to 15 minutes, by brand 15 to 30 minutes Short
Cleanup One or two washes Two rounds of clarifying shampoo Rinse, then condition
Watch out for Formulas differ, follow the label Residue left on the weft tape area Dries natural hair and the weft

Wait times come from Indique (4 June 2025) and Perfect Locks (23 March 2026). Salons vary.

Baby oil works. Indique and Perfect Locks both list it with coconut and olive oil as a remover. It's slow, and it needs a proper clarifying wash afterwards, because oil left in the weft keeps new tape from sticking.

Alcohol is fast and cheap. GOO GOO Hair's removal guide (12 July 2023) lists 91% alcohol as one option. It also dries hair, so condition well after.

Are tape in extensions bad for your hair?

Worn and removed properly, tape-ins are one of the gentler methods: no heat, no beads, and a wide flat bond that spreads the weight. The damage people post about usually comes from one of three places.

When removal is rushed

Pulling tabs apart dry, or peeling them off at home without softening the glue, takes natural hair with the tape. This is the most common cause and the easiest to avoid. Every step above is there to stop it.

When the tape stays in too long

Natural hair grows. The tape moves down with it, and the bond starts to twist and hang lower from the scalp. Cliphair tells clients to refresh tape-ins every 6 to 8 weeks (30 August 2024). Past that point, removal gets harder and tangles form at the root.

When the weft is too heavy for the section

Each tape sandwich hangs on a thin section of natural hair. If that section is too small for the weft, or the hair is already fine, the root takes too much weight. Stylists usually go lighter on fine hair. Our guide to extensions for fine hair covers how much weight thin hair can carry.

Remove tape in extensions so the wefts can go back in

Good hair comes out of a careful removal ready for new tape and another round. New tabs cost little. The weft is what you paid for.

  1. Peel the old tape off the weft. Soak it with remover if it resists.
  2. Wash the wefts with clarifying shampoo to lift every trace of oil and glue. New tape won't hold on an oily weft.
  3. Let them dry flat. Heat on the tape line weakens the weft.
  4. Check the top edge of each weft, where the tape sits. Loose hairs or a frayed edge mean that weft is near the end of its life.
  5. Apply new tape tabs. Cliphair says the refit itself should be done by a trained stylist, and that's sensible for anyone who hasn't placed tape-ins before.

How many rounds a weft survives depends on the hair and how it's been treated. Bleached and coloured hair usually gives out sooner than natural black. More on hold time and what to ask a supplier is in our guide to tape-in hair extensions.

Should you remove tape in extensions at home?

You can. The front and side rows are easy to reach. The back rows are harder, because you can't see the tabs, and that's where people start pulling.

Clip hair and Perfect Locks both recommend a stylist for removal. If you do it at home, get someone to help with the back rows, and give every tab the full wait time.

If the tapes have been in far longer than 8 weeks, book the salon. Old tape that has slid down and matted at the root takes patience and good light.

We make tape-in extensions at our own factory in Vietnam. The hair is cut from women in northern Vietnam. We buy it, sort it, and process it ourselves. Every step is in our 6-step production process.

Channel NewsAsia and NPO Netherlands have both filmed inside our factory, and both broadcasts are public: AZ Hair on Channel NewsAsia, our NPO Netherlands feature. We've held Alibaba Verified Supplier status for 7 years.

Frequently asked questions

What dissolves tape in extension glue?

A tape-in adhesive remover dissolves it fastest. Coconut, olive and baby oil also work but need longer, around 15 to 30 minutes. Rubbing alcohol works quickly and dries the hair.

How to remove tape hair extensions at home?

Clip your hair up, start at the nape, soak each tape bond with remover or oil, wait, then open the tabs with the tail of a comb and slide the weft off. Comb out leftover glue and wash twice with clarifying shampoo. Get help with the back rows.

Does baby oil remove tape extensions?

Yes. Baby oil softens tape-in glue, but slowly. Leave it on the bond for 15 to 30 minutes, and wash the hair and the wefts well afterwards so the oil doesn't stop new tape from sticking.

Are tape in extensions easy to remove?

They're one of the easier methods to take out, because the bond is glue and nothing is heated or clamped. The job takes time. Most damage comes from skipping the wait.

Can you reuse tape in extensions after removal?

Usually, yes. Clean off the old tape, wash and dry the wefts, and apply new tabs. How many times depends on the hair's condition. Our guide on how long hair extensions last covers it across methods.

Before you remove tape in extensions

Set aside enough time, soak every tab, and wait longer than feels necessary. A tab that opens easily is one that won't take your hair with it.

If you remove tape in extensions to reuse them, keep the wefts in order, clean them properly, and check the top edge before they go back in.
