Tape In Hair Extensions: Cost, Hold Time and What to Ask

A tape-in tab is 2.5cm of medical-grade adhesive doing a job a needle and thread does on a hand tied weft. That is the whole trade: faster on, faster off, and a shorter clock until it needs redoing. Almost nothing written about tape-in extensions says that last part out loud.

We manufacture tape-in extensions in our own factory in Vietnam alongside machine weft, hand tied weft, and keratin bond, and ship to salons and distributors in 50+ countries. The reorder math below comes from our own production data, not a stylist's estimate.

A tape weft is a narrow strip of hair with a tape tab running along the top edge. The stylist isolates a thin section of the client's own hair, places one tab underneath it and a second tab on top, then presses the two together to seal the sandwich. A tape press or a few seconds of low heat sets the bond.

Our own regular tape-in runs a 2.5cm tab width, confirmed across the product line, packed 100g to a pack across six lengths and two grades. That width is the classic, most common tab size in the market. A narrower "skinny" or "invisible" tape also exists industry-wide, cut for finer hair and closer-set rows, but it is a separate product line and not one we currently stock.

The install-time column is why tape-in shows up in every stylist's schedule. It is also why it turns over faster: a bond built for speed is a bond that lets go sooner. For a salon, that reorder gap is the real business number. A client on tape-in comes back roughly twice as often as a client on hand tied. That is more chair time booked, but it also means the hair itself gets reused and re-taped more times before it is retired, which changes how a salon should think about grade.

Our own Regular Tape-In line runs from about $40 to $88 per 100g pack, priced by the site on 2026-09-22. The low end is a solid natural shade at 16 inches; the high end is a balayage or highlight shade at 20 inches, where more processing and a second color go into each strand. All 15 colors are 100g, six lengths, two grades: Double Drawn (A++) and Super Double Drawn (A+++).

Retail listings on page one of Google for this term, pulled 2026-09-22, priced noticeably higher per pack: JZ Styles $120 to $230, Donna Bella $125 to $265, Bellami $280 to $335, Indique from $350. Google's AI Overview cited a broader $36 to $165 range from Goo Goo Hair, Donna Bella, and Bellami the same day. None of these are independently audited figures, and none of them are directly comparable to each other or to ours without one more number: pack weight.

Milk & Blush sells its "ultra slim" tape at 25g a pack for $57 to $60. Goo Goo lists a 50g, 20-piece pack. Ours is 100g. A $60 pack of 25g hair and a $60 pack of 100g hair are not the same purchase, and a listing that leads with price alone is hiding the number that actually sets value.

Google's AI Overview for this search, pulled 2026-09-22, states repositioning is needed every 6 to 10 weeks as natural hair grows out. Goo Goo Hair's own product listing states 8 to 10 weeks. Our own product listing states a 6 to 8 week hold. All three are vendor-stated, not independently tested, and all three land inside the same window, which is the most honest thing that can be said about a hold-time claim in this category.

The number that matters more for a salon budgeting reorders: the tape itself is not what wears out first. The bond loosens as the client's own hair grows past the tab. The hair on the weft can usually be re-taped and reused. The real question is how many re-tape cycles a given batch holds its texture through, and that's a question for the supplier, not something a hold-time number answers.

1. What is the tab width, and is it the same on every pack in the batch?
2. What is the packed weight, weighed at packing rather than printed on the label?
3. Is the adhesive medical-grade, and can the supplier name the batch or the manufacturer behind it?
4. Can you film a pack being weighed and a tab being applied, hands in shot, this week?
5. When you reorder the same color in three months, how close will the new batch match the one you have now?
6. Is this length and color in stock, or made to order, and what is the real lead time either way?

Question four is the one that separates a factory from a reseller fastest. A UK buyer who ordered from us this summer asked three times for a video of the hair in hand before paying, and never once asked for a certificate. A certificate can be printed. A factory that does not exist cannot show up live on a video call.
