Raw Hair Bundles: What to Check Before You Reorder

That gap is the whole problem with this category. The label is free to print. The hair underneath is not.

What follows is the inspection routine we would run if we were the ones buying. Eight checks, about twenty minutes, one digital scale and a bowl of water. Run them on any sample you are sent, ours included.

What makes a bundle raw

Raw means the hair left the donor and reached the weft with nothing done to it beyond washing and wefting. One donor per bundle. Cuticle intact, aligned root to tip.

Steam texturing breaks that. So does an acid bath, a colour pass, and a silicone dip. Once any of those happen the hair is virgin or processed, and it should be priced and labelled accordingly. We walk through the full boundary in the raw hair definition.

Here is how thin the information is on this term. We pulled the Google results page for "raw hair bundles" in the United States on 17 August 2026. Nine organic results came back. Eight were shop pages or marketplace listings, one was a TikTok video. Zero were articles explaining what a buyer should check. Google filled the rest of the page with a Popular Products carousel, three local business listings, and an images pack.

So buyers are being sold the category without being taught it. That is why the second order so often disappoints.

The eight checks to run on raw hair bundles before you reorder

1. Weight against the stated gram count.Put the bundle on a digital scale before you touch anything else, packaging off. A 100g bundle reads 100g. Weight is where margin hides: a bundle labelled 100g that weighs 85g is a 15% price increase you never agreed to, and it stays invisible until someone weighs it. Weigh every bundle in the sample order, not one of them. Consistency across the order is the real signal. Our bundles are weighed and packed at full 100g.
2. Weft seam and shedding at the track.Grip the weft, run a thumbnail along the seam, then tug a section firmly five or six times. A few loose strands is normal on any bundle. A visible clump is a machine tension problem or a glue-backed weft that has already started to fail. Glue-backed wefts also dissolve under certain shampoos, which is a warranty conversation you want before the order, not after. Check seam thickness while you are there, because a double weft doubles the seam and the client feels it against the scalp.
3. Root-to-tip thickness.Hold the bundle at the weft, let it hang, and look at the bottom four inches. Single drawn thins toward the tip. Double drawn holds thickness to the end. Both are legitimate products with different jobs. The failure mode is paying a double drawn price for single drawn hair, and it slips past buyers constantly because the difference only shows once the bundle is out of the packaging and hanging free.
4. Cuticle direction.Wet your fingers. Run them down the hair root to tip, then back up tip to root. Down should feel smooth, up should catch slightly. That catch is the cuticle scale and it is the thing you are paying for. If both directions feel identical and glassy, the cuticle has been stripped or coated. An acid bath dissolves the cuticle so mixed-direction hair stops tangling, which is how a factory turns collected floor hair into something that behaves like remy for a few weeks. It also removes the structure that makes raw hair last.
5. Silicone coating.Silicone makes weak hair feel excellent for two washes. Then the client calls you. Fill a bowl with warm water and clarifying shampoo, submerge a small section, work it for a minute, dry it. Coated hair goes from silky to straw in one pass. Raw hair comes out close to how it went in, maybe slightly drier. A faster second test: drop a few loose strands into a glass of water, since heavily coated strands tend to clump and sink quickly. Do this on the sample, before the 40-bundle order.
6. Wash-and-revert behaviour.Wash the sample and air dry it flat. Then watch what it does on its own. Raw hair returns to its donor pattern. If a bundle arrived bone straight and dried with a bend in it, the straightness came from steam or heat and the vendor sold you a finish while calling it an origin. This answers a question buyers ask us constantly: should raw hair be bone straight? Usually not. Raw Vietnamese hair runs naturally straight to slightly wavy, and one wash will tell you which one you bought.
7. Colour consistency across the order.Lay every bundle side by side, under daylight, at the same angle. Natural black is not one colour. Different donors carry different undertones, some cooler, some warmer. Three bundles installed on one head with a warm bundle in the middle is visible from across a room, and the client will see it before the stylist does. 8. Smell.Open the packaging and smell the hair at the root end. Raw hair smells like hair. A chemical smell means processing residue that never rinsed out. A sour or musty smell means the hair sat wet before it dried, and that bundle will shed early no matter how it looks today.

What a raw bundle should cost

Numbers first, and these are other people's numbers.

The Popular Products carousel on the "raw hair bundles" results page on 17 August 2026 listed ten items priced between $50 and $530 per bundle. Honey Hair Co at $156.75. UNice at $199. Luvme at $65.78. KingRich at $530. Those are seller-published retail prices scraped by Google Shopping on that date, self-published, not independently audited.

A tenfold spread on one keyword tells you the word "raw" is doing no pricing work at all.

Wholesale sits below every one of those figures, and the spread narrows sharply once you buy by the carton. We do not publish an AZ Hair price list, because price moves with length, texture, colour and quantity, and any public number would be wrong inside a month. One note on the bottom of that range. A $50 retail bundle is close to what genuinely raw hair costs to produce before anybody makes money on it. When a price sits far under the market, the useful question is which of the eight checks it would fail.

Drawn type and why two bundles at the same length weigh differently

Two 20-inch bundles, both weighing exactly 100g, can hang completely differently on the rack.

That hand-pulling is the cost. It throws away usable hair to buy uniformity, and the yield loss goes straight into the price.

The practical consequence: a 3-bundle install in single drawn at 20 inches often needs a fourth bundle to look full at the ends. Double drawn usually does not. Run that arithmetic before comparing per-bundle prices between two vendors, because the cheaper bundle can end up the more expensive install.

How to write a spec so the second order matches the first

The most common complaint we hear from a new buyer is that order two did not match order one. Nine times in ten, the spec was verbal.

Write it down. A usable spec has seven lines.

Then keep a physical retain. One bundle from order one, bagged and dated, stays on your shelf. Order two gets compared against that bundle.

Lifespan depends more on the install and the client's care routine than on the hair, but aligned-cuticle Vietnamese hair holds 6 to 12 months longer in salon use than processed hair. Bundles that shed inside the first month usually failed at the weft or the drying stage, and that is a manufacturing fault worth raising with the vendor.

What is silicone coating and how do I test for it?

Silicone is a surface treatment that makes damaged or mixed-direction hair feel smooth. It washes off in two to three shampoos and takes the illusion with it. Test by washing a small section with clarifying shampoo and air drying it. Coated hair turns dry and rough. Raw hair comes out close to how it started.

Why did my second order look different from my first?
